Real English - The American Dream

Hi again - I have just come across this video called The American Dream. This video is very interesting. It is an entertaining but hard hitting look at how the problems we have today and there is nothing new, and why leaders throughout our history have warned us and fought against the current type of financial system we have today.

Apart from the knowledge, as usual, there are many vocabularies that you will learn in this video. The good thing is there are English subtitles to read along in case we can't keep up with the rapid message in the video.

Good resource to learn English and also learn how the monetary system works in America nowadays. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Real English - Google Thailand's Site Tour

When talking about English learning process, it is very important that you immerse yourself in English environment so that you can really learn real English usage.

Now technologies help a lot as there are tons of English resources on the internet that you can learn from. Let take Youtube as an example of one of the best video resources.

 I always believe that giving enough and good input will always result in good output. Reading and listening are 2 very important inputs that will enable you to produce good outputs (speaking and writing).

Word Usage: Responsible

Responsible (Adjective)
There were many occasion I saw people using the word responsible incorrectly. Some didn't use it with the right preposition.
There are 2 prepositions that can come after responsible which are for and to.

หลายต่อหลายครั้งที่ผมได้รับ email จากทั้งเพื่อนร่วมงานและคนอื่นๆ ที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษกันทุกวัน แต่ก็มักจะใช้กันผิด คำแรกที่อยากนำเสนอก็คือคำว่า responsible

ซึ่งวิธีการใช้ที่ถูกต้องมีดังนี้
ใช้กับ preposition for โครงสร้าง คือ
be + responsible + for something
be + responsible + for doing something

ในโครงสร้างนี้มีสองความหมายคือ in charge of หรือ รับผิดชอบในส่วนที่เป็นหน้าที่ กับอีกความหมายหนึ่งคือ รับผิดชอบในกรณี guilty คือมีความผิดหรือรับผิดชอบในสิ่งที่ก่อให้เกิดความเสียหาย

ตัวอย่าง
ในความหมายที่แปลว่า In charge of

I am a security guard and I am responsible for the safety of everybody who is on board.
Airline cabin crew are responsible for the comfort, safety and welfare of passengers travelling on aircraft during flights.
They are responsible for training new employees.

คำนามของ responsible ก็คือ responsiblity

• I am a security guard  and my responsibility is making sure everybody who is on board are safe.
• The responsibilities of the airline cabin crew are taking care of the comfort, safety and welfare of passengers travelling on aircraft during flights. 
• Their responsibility is training new employees.

ในความหมายที่แปลว่า Guilty

• You are responsible for every single penny of the damage costs.
• Who are responsible for this accident.

อีกโครงสร้างหนึ่งคือ
be + responsible + to someone

ในส่วนนี้จะหมายถึ่งว่า อยู่ภายใต้ความรับผิดชอบดูแลของใคร
ตัวอย่างเช่น

• Cabinet members are directly responsible to the President.

Left VS Right

Learning Phrase/Sentence:

There are two sides of my brain, the right side and the left side. There is nothing left on the right and there is nothing right on the left.         Meaning:           There are two sides of my brain, the right side and the left side. There is nothing left on the right side and there is nothing right on the left side. There are 2 meanings of right and left in this context. The first term are the location, the right side and the left side. The second term are the condition: There is nothing left on the right (side)  = there is nothing (no brain) on the right side. There is nothing right on the left (side) = there is problem with the left brain. In THAI: ผมมีสมองสองข้าง ข้างขวาและข้างซ้าย ทางด้านขวาไม่มีอะไร (เหลือ) เลย ส่วนทางด้านซ้ายก็ไม่มีอะไรดีเลย

More on right and left:

Condition:
When the time is right (suitable) and the opportunity permits, I will certainly pay you a visit.
This is not right, you have no right(n.) to talk to me that way.
There are only 2 pieces of cake left, would you like to take one and leave another one for your sister?
She left (V2 -> leave) her bag on the right place.

ประโยคตัวอย่างนี้เป็นการเล่นคำ โดยเอาคำว่า right  ที่แปลว่า ทางด้านขวา และ ทำงานได้ถูกต้องมาใช้ รวมทั้งคำว่า left  ที่แปลว่าทางด้ายซ้าย และ ที่แปลว่าเหลืออยู่
เหมือนกับคำภาษาไทยเราก็มี ผมนึกออกประโยคหนึ่ง

"มีเมียมากแสดงว่ามีเมียน้อย แต่ถ้ามีเมียน้อยก็แสดงว่ามีเมียมาก"
เอาคำว่ามากและน้อยมาเล่นนั้นเอง
